To study or work in Italy, an official certification of language proficiency at level B1 is required according to the criteria indicated in the Common European Framework of Reference for languages (CEFR: to find out more about the CEFR, click here).
Levels marked as B identify an independent speaker, able to operate in Italian daily, business, and academic life.
Level B1 is normally required to obtain an Erasmus scholarship. Most universities prepare internal exams to test the candidate’s language proficiency level and sometimes accept private academic attendance certificates. Another way to obtain an Italian B1 certificate is by passing one of the official exams: CELI, CILS and Plida. Find out at your university and we will take care of the rest.

CILS B1 Cittadinanza
Law 132 of 1 December 2018 establishes that to obtain Italian citizenship it is necessary to have a B1 level in the Italian language, according to the parameters indicated in the CEFR. The CILS center (Certification of Italian as a Foreign Language) of the Università per stranieri of Siena has designed an exam for this level, aimed at those who apply for Italian citizenship. As this exam has specific objectives, it has a different format than the standard CILS B1 exam, which means that it is based on a much more limited portion of proficiency (it is considerably easier than the standard B1). Therefore, it is accepted only in case of citizenship application and is not accepted for academic or work purposes (it is not valid for access to the Erasmus program).
