Unification of Italy
What you’ve never been told about the unity of Italy. The period known as Risorgimento is one of the most complex and interesting in the history of Italy. The official story provides a very romantic view of the unity process, but, in this course, we will discover the real actors in this process and the economic and political interests that drive it.
In the masterpiece Il Gattopardo, set in the period of the Risorgimento, it reads “everything changes so that nothing changes”, to describe an extraordinary geopolitical change (the birth of a nation, the Italian one) that, however, represents a single change on the surface.
One of the most compelling issues that is not resolved either with the unity of Italy or after the end of the Second World War is undoubtedly the so-called Questione Meridionale, that is, the need to implement economic and political measures so that the South of Italy can have its socio-economic development.

Due to the fact that Italy is a relatively young country (its unification dates back to 1861) and due to the late literacy process, the Italian linguistic reality is presented as one of the most fragmented in Italy. Knowing the traits of regional Italians will help you to integrate more into Italian everyday practices and better understand their social and cultural dimensions.
But we will not only talk about language: we will travel together to discover the typical products and dishes of each region, its most important festivals and the traditions that constitute the foundations of the local culture and society.
